Everywhere you look, new cannabis compounds and products are hitting the cannabis marketplace every day. The latest on the market is hexahydrocannabinol or HHC.

Do not be alarmed if you have not heard about HHC (yet). It is only one of the newest cannabinoids being studied for its potential as a wellness product.

Even if you have heard about HHC, you may still have some questions. So we put together this guide that might help you better understand this new and exciting cannabinoid.

What is HHC?

HHC stands for hexahydrocannabinol. Made from THC that has been hydrogenated, which involves adding Hydrogen to an existing molecule.

Results are a cannabinoid about 80% as potent as THC and legal (as long as it is derived from hemp). Early indications suggest HHC can be used for many of the same purposes as THC due to its chemical and pharmacological similarities.

How is HHC made?

HHC is produced using hydrogenation, in which hydrogen is added to THC, effectively altering its molecular composition and overall effect on the human body.

Today, using modern cannabis technology, scientists make HHC by first extracting CBD from raw hemp. Once the THC is hydrogenated, it is exposed to metal catalysts to speed up the process.

Is HHC legal to produce, sell and purchase in the United States?

The 2018 Farm Bill made it federally legal to produce, sell and purchase HHC as long as it is derived from hemp containing no more than .3% THC.

However, due to the often murky legal status of cannabinoids, it is always good advice to check your local legislation to ensure you are not breaking any state laws.

Where can I buy HHC?

Currently, there are only a handful of companies that sell HHC. However, a quick online search will find about a dozen retailers offering HHC products, mostly vape carts and gummies.

If HHC remains legally viable and becomes less expensive to manufacture, this promising cannabinoid will become more available in the diverse cannabis marketplace.

Can HHC be shipped in the mail?

As long as the HHC is derived from hemp, it is federally legal under the Farm Bill of 2018. Therefore, if you have had other cannabinoids like CBD or Delta 8 THC shipped before, you should be OK ordering HHC.

However, since cannabis laws are constantly in flux, it is probably best to check your state’s legislation to ensure you are not breaking the law.

Will HHC show up on a drug test?

So far, there is not enough definitive scientific evidence to know whether or not HHC will leave evidence of use in your blood, urine, or hair.

However, it seems likely that HHC metabolizes in similar ways to THC, which could lead to a failed drug test.

Therefore, if you are subject to regular or random drug tests, it is suggested that you avoid using HHC.

How can you consume HHC?

There are only a few HHC products: primarily edibles and vape cartridges. However, as the cannabinoid gains more popularity, there will undoubtedly be more HHC innovations coming down the road.

In addition, as brands start producing HHC commercially, we will begin to see more and more people formulating with it, resulting in more and more products.

Does HHC have any medical benefits?

HHC has not been widely studied, but there has been some promising research. For example, a 2011 study showed that some synthetic analogs of HHC “strongly inhibited breast cancer cell-induced angiogenesis and tumor growth.”

In addition, Japanese researchers published a paper in 2007 describing HHC’s impressive pain-blocking capability in mice. But it is probably too early to say whether HHC has excellent promise as a therapeutic drug.

Is HHC safe to consume?

Like many new hemp-derived cannabinoids, there is no standard dose and little to no research on the immediate or long-term effects of HHC ingestion.

Because hemp-derived cannabinoids are not subject to regulation, always ensure that your retailer provides transparent, third-party laboratory testing to ensure your HHC is free of harmful impurities.

What does HHC feel like?

Because everybody’s biochemistry and neurology are unique, it is difficult to say how using HHC would feel.

Typically, users have described HHC as having a gradual onset followed by a smooth, calming experience that is longer than delta-8 and shorter than delta-9. However, more research is needed to understand better how HHC affects humans.
