While both organic compounds are part of a chemical family known as cannabinoids, there are still some significant differences between CBD and CBN.

Although CBD and CBN have several different effects on the body, studies have found that they may help balance some of the body’s vital biological functions, reduce pain, and lessen its reaction to infection. 

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Cannabinol (CBN) are two of the more than 100 cannabinoids identifiable in the hemp plant.

Although CBN was discovered some time ago, the cannabinoid has not gotten as much attention as THC and CBD over the past several decades.

There has been very little research on the potential benefits of CBN, but several studies suggest it may have the potential to reduce pain and act as a sedative. 

What is CBN?

CBN—the abbreviation of Cannabinol— is the cannabinoid produced from the oxidation of THC.

CBN is found in hemp leaves in a very low concentration ranging between 0.1 and 1.6% but increases as the plant ages. Storage conditions also affect how concentrated cannabinol becomes as well. 

Flowers or concentrates exposed to light or air will begin to oxidize as they age. As a result, they will tend to have higher levels of CBN when compared to fresher products or products that have been stored properly.

It shows that the level of CBN is not determined by genetic factors but by environmental factors. Because of this, there are currently no high-CBN cannabis strains available on the market.

Originally, CBN was believed to be the cannabinoid responsible for the high sensation associated with cannabis use.

What is CBD?

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill changed how the United States classifies CBD products.

This bill stipulates that non-intoxicating cannabinoids are legal on a federal level, meaning that CBD is no longer a controlled substance. Nevertheless, each state determines its guidelines on CBD.

Currently, most states allow CBD, although there may be different laws in each region. Generally, CBD products derived from hemp containing less than 0.3% THC are permitted.

CBD works by interacting with a complex system of neurotransmitters and receptors in our bodies, also known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

This system is throughout the entire body. It is believed to help modulate a wide range of physiological processes, including pain sensation, body temperature, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune function, and reproduction.

Because CBD is a relatively well-researched chemical compound, we know a bit more about this Cannabinoid than we do other Cannabinoids, such as CBN.

Both CBD and CBN are cannabinoids. But, as you can see, they are not interchangeable.

They are found in different quantities in the cannabis plant, and they interact with our Endocannabinoid Systems differently. 

CBN Effects 

Like THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids, CBN produces therapeutic effects through interactions with the chemical receptors found in nearly every body system.

The two primary chemical receptors are called the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors play a pivotal role in what is known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

This system regulates a wide range of our body’s functions required for optimal health. 

CB1 receptors are found throughout the body but are concentrated in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 receptors are more prevalent in the immune system.

CBN interacts with these receptors to help regulate various functions, including pain, appetite, hormones, inflammation, and blood pressure. 

CBN Benefits 

CBD has several other potential uses in the body, though the scientific evidence is still under review.

CBN might be able to relieve pain. There is scientific evidence that suggests that CBN influences the activity of neurons that are sensitive to capsaicin.

These capsaicin-sensitive nerves are essential to the body’s pain signaling and perception.

Furthermore, A 2019 study found that CBN successfully relieved pain in rats. It also concluded that a combination of CBN and CBD was even more effective than either alone.

CBN also may be able to help stimulate the appetite.

A comparative study conducted in 2012 showed that CBN ”induced a CB(1)R-mediated increase in appetitive behaviors” and “also significantly increased the intake during hour 1 and total chow consumed during the test.”

This may make CBN a therapeutic option to help increase appetite in people who struggle to maintain an appetite because of an illness or its treatment.

Additionally, CBD might have beneficial antibacterial properties.

A study conducted in 2008 by the Journal of Natural Products determined that CBN exhibited potent activity against a variety of dangerous bacterial strains such as MRSA bacteria, which are known to cause staph infections.

The study found that CBN could kill off these bacteria, which are typically resistant to several types of antibiotics.

Research indicates that CBN may be a potent anti-inflammatory agent, which can help stave off various age and stress-related illnesses.

In addition, a study from 2010 found that CBN reduced inflammation in test subjects. CBN is currently under examination for its possible therapeutic role in treating inflammatory conditions.

The one area where CBN truly seems to shine is with the powerful sedative properties it contains.

Research in mice has shown that CBN can prolong sleep time. Other research indicates CBN’s sedative effects increase when combined with THC. But there is, at this point, a lack of scientific research into the sleep-inducing properties of CBN. 

CBN is slowly proving to be another valuable resource derived from the cannabis plant.

However, for now, more research is still needed to determine exactly how it interacts with our bodies.
