How They Stack Up

Cannabinoid Extract Profile

cbdMD Recover Tub uses broad extract CBD for its body balms, meaning it includes helpful cannabinoids like CBN and CBG to assist with the relief process and support the effectiveness of CBD as the active ingredient.

PureKana Body Balm features CBD Isolate, a purified form of CBD stripped of all other cannabinoids, rendering the risk of THC consumption completely disarmed.

Supporting Ingredients

cbdMD Recover Tub features Arnica, an herbal treatment used to ease discomfort. A topical form of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) assists with overall joint health. Lastly, histamine dihydrochloride provides quick, temporary pain relief by dilating blood vessels and creating a warm sensation at the application site.

PureKana Body Balm provides moisturizing, healing ingredients like almond oil, beeswax, Vitamin E, and coconut oil.

Fragrance Options

cbdMD Recover Tub includes pleasant smelling ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. Still, there are no specified fragrances available in any size or version of CBDMD cream.

PureKana Body Balm boasts fragrant versions of its balm in lavender, menthol, and mint.

Value

cbdMD Recover Tub comes in at $29.99 for its 300 mg potency, $59.99 for its 750 mg potency, and $89.99 for its 1500 mg potency. Each balm is in a 4oz tub.

PureKana Body Balm comes in at $17.99 for its smallest potency (150 mg). Its higher potency option at 600 mg at $47.99.

Potency

cbdMD Recover Tub starts at 300 mg in a tub, then goes as high as 1500 mg in a 4 oz tub.

PureKana Body Balm comes in 2 potencies, 300 mg and 600 mg in 0.5 oz and 2 oz “discs,” respectively.

Our Take

PureKana and cbdMD took on the project of topical CBD balms and went in different directions, with a few parallels. PureKana opted for less is more, while CBDMD took a more complex approach, considering the benefits of instant relief and herbal therapeutics like Arnica.

On the cannabinoid profile, the brands diverge. cbdMD is using broad-spectrum CBD extract for its balm. This choice guarantees the inclusion of beneficial ingredients like terpenes, as well as cannabinoids, in this case emerging popular cannabinoids like CBN and CBG, without the inclusion of controversial THC. Cannabinoids like CBG and CBN contribute to the “entourage effect,” a phenomenon that may increase the efficacy and reliability of CBD as a stand-alone active ingredient.

PureKana chose CBD isolate to anchor its topical balm as a topical product, avoiding the controversy of THC even at an undetectable level (as in CBDMD’s broad-spectrum approach). This may be a belief on PureKana that purer equals better, but like arguments for or against the entourage effect, it is hard to know for sure.

Supporting ingredients in PureKana’s balm include shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, Vitamin E, and almond oil, all of which are highly effective and moisturizing and soothing irritation and infusing the skin with helpful vitamins and nutrients.

cbdMD utilizes an additional active ingredient to that of broad-spectrum CBD, which is histamine dihydrochloride, a potent anti-inflammatory and blood vessel dilator that provides instant relief while CBD slowly works its magic. Also included in the supporting ingredients are arnica, an herbal remedy that combats pain from everyday bruising and injury, and aloe vera and MSM for additional therapeutic support.

Fragrance options are where PureKana truly shines, as they give consumers the option of lavender, mint, or menthol. At the same time, cbdMD lets its natural ingredients like shea and aloe do the work of pleasant fragrances.

Value is a trickier metric to measure once one gets into the details; PureKana’s 0.5 oz, 300 mg potency is priced at a reasonable $17.99, but cbdMD’s 300 mg edition at 2 oz (quadruple that of PureKana) is still only $29.99. PureKana’s 600 mg, 2 oz balm is $47.99, while cbdMD’s 4 oz, 750 mg edition is priced only $12 more than PureKana’s smaller, less potent version, coming in at $59.99.

Potency is also a winner for cbdMD, as PureKana (as of this writing) caps off at 600 mg, while cbdMD goes all the way to 1500 mg for its highest potency, with a 3000 mg edition on the way soon.

We give this round to cbdMD.
